It started like any other day. The elves that were normal-sized kept muttering about giant elves and how they should be sent to the Island of Misfit Toys, and glaring at me in general. Like I said, a normal day. But as I went about my duties, inspecting toys and filling out paperwork, something caught my eye. A toy box that didn’t seem right. I opened it to find a letter inside.

I was about to just put the letter aside; they weren’t supposed to be returned to the little boy or girl who sent them, but I just couldn’t put it down. I opened it up and what I found wasn’t a letter from a child. No, this was from a grown man. One who still believed in the magic of Christmas, and maybe Santa, enough to ask for something he’s always wanted but never seemed to have: someone to love and spend his life with.

The letter captivates me and despite knowing better, I decide I have to know more about this man. And before I know it, I’m writing him back. His file says he’s just moved to Alaska, and he doesn’t know anyone in town, outside of his bakery, anyway. And that’s what gets me in trouble. My attempt to give the guy some advice, to tell him to be patient, that love will come along to a great guy like him, turns into him writing back!

This is where I start breaking even more rules. An oversized elf like me shouldn’t be writing to humans, especially adult humans, but here I am, writing away, under a fake name, with a fake postmark on the envelopes, collecting the mail before anyone else can. I’m exhausted because I’m the first one in every morning and the last one out, but each new letter brings a smile.

Until Adam changes everything. He wants to meet me and says he won’t write to me anymore unless I, at least, do a video call with him. That’s when I really started to break the rules. Deep down, I’ve always longed for a love of my own, and the way Adam writes, with so much longing and hope, makes me want to fight the world for him. But can a relationship between an elf and a human really happen? And can I face the consequences if anyone ever finds out what I’ve been doing all this time? I know I can’t keep this up forever, but I can’t walk away from him either.

I’ve always been a simple man. I opened my bakery in Alaska when I left city life behind to get back to the basics of baking and life. I’m just very lonely. I don’t know anyone other than customers and vendors, and I got a bit whimsical. I wrote a letter to Santa. I never expected to get a letter back from one of his elves.

Glenda Elflander’s (Julie’s) letters are sweet, warm, and offer advice that’s sensible and sometimes humorous. I have to write back to her, if only to thank her for responding. But when she writes back, I wonder about her. Who is she really? Is she really a she? Or is someone playing a cruel joke on me? I don’t sense anything like that, so it becomes a back-and-forth over the next few months.

What started as almost a joke, on my own behalf, turns into something more with each new letter I send and receive. Each letter exposes some new facet of her character, and I find myself writing back with more honesty than I’ve ever had with anyone before. I’m starting to feel there’s a real spark between us, but can I trust someone who won’t even give me their phone number? Who won’t text or email?

I send one more letter, demanding that she give me something to let me know that she’s real. I didn’t expect to actually meet her, but when she walks into that restaurant, the whole world becomes brighter. But is she for real? There are still secrets in her life, and I suspect there’s one that could change everything, if only she’d trust me enough to tell me. Can Christmas really bring me what I asked for in my secret letter to Santa, or am I about to get my heart broken?
